“NLV Police Chief Joseph Chronister shafts Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, NLV City Council and Active Duty Military Veterans”

NORTH LAS VEGAS, NEVADA (October 8, 2013) — A NLVP (North Las Vegas Police) officer declared that NLVP Chief Joseph Chronister intentionally denied paid days to active military police officers, even though the current law promises pay.

The officer’s also stated that NLVP Chief Chronister openly discriminates against veterans, female officers and other minorities because he (Chronister) wants to send a message to Nevada’s Hispanic Governor Brian Sandoval and North Las Vegas’ Hispanic and African-American City Councilmember’s Isaac Barron and Pamela A. Goynes-Brown.

According to NRS 281.145, any active member of the military whom answers a call to duty upon the officer’s or employee’s request, shall serve under orders without loss of the regular compensation. Also no such absence may be a part of the employee’s annual vacation provided for by law.

On June 1, 2013 Governor Sandoval signed into effect Assembly Bill No. 364 which increased paid days from 15 to 39 and becomes effective on October 1, 2013.

Official correspondence was obtained including e-mails from NLVP Officers to Shawn Andrews (Executive Secretary of North Las Vegas Police Department) requesting an explanation of NRS 281.145 and AB 364 that were purposely ignored by Andrews.

Also an email was obtained where Erin Laxton (Fiscal Tech of NLVPD) told an officer, “I have been advised by HR that effective immediately Drills will no longer be paid under the Military Leave element.” Drills are mandated by employees of active military veterans and now veterans must choose between obeying the military that they are under contract with or being discriminated against and financially penalized by NLVP Chief Chronister. All officers involved have filed grievances and some plan to seek help from Governor Sandoval and NLV Councilmember’s Isaac Barron and Pamela A. Goynes-Brown.
