The Great State of Nevada
August 29, 2025
For far too long, Nevada has allowed judges to glide through election cycles without any meaningful challenge quietly. When judges run unopposed, voters are robbed of their constitutional right to hold the judiciary accountable. A judge should never be guaranteed six more years on the bench simply because no one dared to file against them. The stakes are too high—for families, businesses, and the integrity of our courts—to let the judiciary remain insulated from public scrutiny.
Legislative Efforts to Bring Accountability:
In the last two legislative sessions, Veterans In Politics International (VIPI) introduced the Remove or Retain Bill. This bill proposed a simple yet powerful reform: if a judge runs unopposed, their name would still appear on the ballot. Voters could then choose “None of These Candidates.” If “None” receives more votes than the judge, that judge is removed from the bench. The Nevada Judicial Selection Commission would then send three qualified names to the Governor for appointment, and in the following election, the new judge would face a retention vote.
This bill was designed to give the people a voice in every judicial race, to ensure that judges cannot coast unchallenged. Unfortunately, the bill never made it out of committee. But that does not mean the fight is over. It only underscores the urgent need for attorneys to step forward and run.
Why Attorneys Must Step Up:
Nevada has more than 12,000 licensed attorneys. There is no shortage of qualified professionals who meet the 10-year practice requirement to serve as a district court judge. Yet, too often, attorneys are discouraged from running, intimidated by the political process, or told to “wait their turn.” That mindset protects incumbents and undermines democracy.
The strategy is simple: avoid crowded races where three or four candidates split the vote. Instead, run against a single sitting judge. In a one-on-one race, the odds are 50/50. History has shown that in the last two election cycles, sitting judges can be defeated. In fact, when candidates have stepped up with courage, voters have proven willing to make a change.
The 2026 Judicial Election Landscape:
Every District Court Judge in Nevada—82 in total—will be on the ballot in 2026. Of those, 58 sit on the Eighth Judicial District Court in Clark County. This presents an unprecedented opportunity. With elections only once every six years, this is the moment for attorneys to challenge the status quo.
Adding to this urgency is the reality that many judges are expected to retire, and in 2027, district court judges will receive a pay increase. For qualified attorneys, this is not only a chance to serve the public and restore confidence in the courts, but also a practical career opportunity that will not come again for another six years.
Transparency and Accountability:
VIPI has made it clear: we have conducted extensive background checks on many judges and are prepared to inform the public about their records. This includes reversals by the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals, as well as courtroom transcripts and videos, as well as personal misdeeds both on and off the bench. Judges should be aware that their actions are being closely monitored, and attorneys should understand that they will not be standing alone in these cases.
And one critical reminder for sitting judges: if they lose their election, they become ineligible to serve as senior judges. That reality should humble anyone who thinks they can hold their seat without challenge.
A New Era of Campaign Support:
To make this possible, VIPI Consulting, LLC has launched as a new management and consulting organization specializing in judicial races (see VIPI Consulting: VIPI Consulting: Campaign Management Services | Las Vegas, Nevada). For attorneys who want to run but are unsure how to navigate campaigns, VIPI Consulting provides the expertise, strategy, and support necessary to compete. Candidates now have a choice—they no longer need to rely on the same insiders who discourage competition.
Conclusion: The Time Is Now:
Judicial elections matter because they shape the very foundation of justice in Nevada. Judges wield extraordinary power over families, businesses, and individual rights. No one should have the privilege of holding that power without being held accountable at the ballot box.
In 2026, the entire District Court Bench will face reelection. Attorneys across Nevada must seize this once-in-every-six-years opportunity. Do not let fear or pressure silence you. Do not wait another six years. Step forward, run where the odds are even, and give the people of Nevada the choice they deserve.
