Nevada Republican Party Chairman Michael McDonald: A History of Ethics Violations, Political Controversies, Questionable Associations, and Failed Leadership

By Steve Sanson, President of Veterans In Politics International, Inc.

October 22, 2026

Michael J. McDonald has served as a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer, Las Vegas city councilman, political operative, and chairman of the Nevada Republican Party.

His political career has been marked by ethics investigations, controversial relationships with nightclub operators, allegations involving money and political influence, and questions about his leadership.

For years, McDonald has portrayed himself as a Republican leader. But his public record raises a far more troubling question: Has his leadership benefited Nevada Republicans, or has it primarily benefited Michael McDonald and his political associates?

As a longtime Republican, military veteran, and president of Veterans In Politics International, Inc., I believe McDonald’s record deserves intense public scrutiny.

1. LVMPD: Police Reprimands and Questionable Associations

In 1993, while serving as a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer, McDonald received a verbal reprimand for disclosing confidential police information concerning nightclub owner Sam Cecola to a county commissioner, according to historical reporting by the Las Vegas Sun.

The incident raised questions about his judgment and handling of sensitive law-enforcement information.

McDonald also faced scrutiny concerning his relationship with Crazy Horse Too nightclub owner Rick Rizzolo.

A separate 1998 Metro Internal Affairs investigation cleared McDonald of improper associations. Nevertheless, the controversy surrounding his relationships with nightclub operators continued during his political career.

The public has every right to examine how a former police officer developed relationships with individuals whose businesses later attracted substantial law-enforcement attention.

2. Rick Rizzolo, the Crazy Horse Too, and Allegations of Payments

Rick Rizzolo, the former owner of the Crazy Horse Too nightclub, maintained a longstanding association with McDonald.

A March 26, 2006, Las Vegas Sun investigation described allegations contained in FBI reports involving nightclub operator Michael Galardi.

According to the reporting, Galardi alleged that McDonald received money from nightclub operators and described payments allegedly associated with political influence.

Galardi also reported a conversation in which McDonald allegedly referred to receiving $10,000 in cash from another nightclub owner.

These allegations deserve scrutiny, although they were not established as criminal convictions against McDonald.

The question remains: How much money has McDonald received throughout his career from individuals and businesses seeking access to political power?

3. The Las Vegas Ethics Review Board Findings

On November 8, 2000, the Las Vegas Ethics Review Board found McDonald in violation of the city’s ethics code.

The findings involved conflicts of interest and conduct associated with private business interests while McDonald held public office.

One controversy involved Las Vegas Sportspark, in which his private employer had a financial interest.

Although McDonald abstained from voting on the matter, evidence presented to the board concerned his behind-the-scenes involvement.

The findings resulted in a recommendation that McDonald be removed from office.

This was not simply a political opponent making accusations. It was an official municipal ethics proceeding that resulted in findings against an elected official.

4. Nevada Commission on Ethics: Conflicts of Interest

The Nevada Commission on Ethics examined McDonald’s conduct in matters involving the Ranger Building and Las Vegas Sportspark.

Official Opinion No. 00-41 documented questions concerning his public responsibilities and private employment.

At the time, McDonald was employed by Las Vegas Color Graphics, whose ownership interests overlapped with matters involving city government.

The relationship between public decision-making and private financial interests raised significant ethics concerns.

Nevada voters should expect elected officials to place their public responsibilities ahead of private financial relationships.

5. FBI Investigations and Prosecutorial Decisions

Historical reporting describes disagreements between Metro investigators and prosecutors concerning whether McDonald should face criminal charges arising from earlier investigations.

In October 2000, the Las Vegas Sun reported that Metro officials were dissatisfied with a decision by the Clark County District Attorney’s Office not to prosecute McDonald.

The decision not to prosecute did not establish criminal wrongdoing. Nevertheless, the investigation and the disagreement among officials were significant public controversies.

The fact that a public official avoids prosecution does not erase documented ethics findings or prevent voters from questioning that official’s judgment.

6. The 2020 Presidential Electors Controversy

McDonald became a central figure in the controversy surrounding Nevada’s 2020 presidential electors.

In December 2023, Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford announced criminal charges against McDonald and five other Republicans in connection with certificates purporting to award Nevada’s electoral votes to Donald Trump.

The case attracted national attention.

In August 2026, the criminal case was dismissed. The Attorney General subsequently appealed that dismissal.

As of October 22, 2026, the appeal remains an important legal development. McDonald has not been convicted in this case.

Regardless of the ultimate outcome, the controversy placed Nevada’s Republican leadership under extraordinary scrutiny.

7. McDonald’s Business Dealings, Consulting, and Political Influence

McDonald’s business relationships have repeatedly raised questions about the intersection of private financial interests and political influence.

Historical reporting has examined his consulting arrangements, lobbying activities, government appointments, and business dealings.

One particularly important issue involves whether individuals or organizations doing business with McDonald were also seeking access to government officials or political decision-makers.

McDonald has described certain payments as compensation for legitimate consulting services.

However, Nevada Republicans should demand transparency concerning any business arrangements that could create conflicts with his responsibilities as party chairman.

Political leadership should never become a private business opportunity concealed from the people who elected that leader.

8. Nevada Republican Party Finances: Who Benefits?

McDonald has chaired the Nevada Republican Party since 2012.

During that time, Republicans have experienced significant victories and defeats in Nevada.

The party’s fundraising, spending, candidate recruitment, organizational growth, and election performance deserve a comprehensive accounting.

Federal Election Commission reports disclose millions of dollars in receipts and expenditures associated with the Nevada Republican Central Committee.

But those totals alone do not answer the questions that matter most.

Who receives the money? Who approves the expenditures? Which consultants and vendors benefit? What results have those expenditures produced?

And perhaps the most important question:

DO YOU ACTUALLY BELIEVE MICHAEL McDONALD IS NOT GETTING PAID FOR HIS POLITICAL INFLUENCE AS NEVADA REPUBLICAN PARTY CHAIRMAN?

I believe Nevada Republicans are entitled to know whether McDonald receives compensation for political consulting, campaign services, introductions, or other activities involving individuals who benefit from his position.

I am not presenting undisclosed payments as proven facts. I am demanding financial transparency.

If these arrangements are legitimate, the appropriate contracts, disclosures, and records should establish that.

9. Steve Miller, City Hall, and Political Relationships

Former Las Vegas City Councilman Steve Miller publicly challenged McDonald’s political conduct during the 1999 Ward 1 election.

The dispute included questions about McDonald’s relationship with Rick Rizzolo and the Crazy Horse Too nightclub.

Miller raised concerns about whether McDonald’s official actions benefited private business interests.

McDonald denied improperly advancing those interests.

The controversy remains part of the historical record of McDonald’s political career.

For decades, questions about McDonald’s relationships with powerful individuals have followed him from City Hall to the Nevada Republican Party.

10. Why Does McDonald Exclude the Media From Republican Party Meetings?

I have repeatedly criticized what I regard as McDonald’s efforts to exclude journalists from Nevada Republican Party meetings and conventions.

In my experience, his leadership has demonstrated hostility toward outside scrutiny.

Why should a political organization that asks the public for donations, volunteers, and votes be afraid of reporters observing its proceedings?

I believe McDonald fears the accountability that independent journalism can bring.

If meetings are legitimately closed under party rules, party leadership should explain those rules, identify who authorized the exclusions, and disclose which proceedings remain open to members and the press.

Transparency should be the standard, not the exception.

11. Secret Campaign Work, Political Compensation, and Republican Election Losses

I question whether McDonald has performed privately compensated campaign work while simultaneously serving as Nevada Republican Party chairman.

If so, Republicans deserve to know which candidates or committees retained him, what compensation he received, and whether any arrangements created conflicts of interest.

I am also deeply concerned about the party’s electoral performance under his leadership.

In my opinion, decisions made by McDonald and his political allies have damaged Republican candidates and, in some races, benefited Democratic opponents.

Has McDonald’s leadership helped elect Republicans, or have his decisions contributed to Republican defeats?

That question deserves a race-by-race examination of candidate recruitment, party endorsements, financial support, independent expenditures, and election results.

I am not claiming that deliberate election sabotage has been established. I am questioning whether the chairman’s decisions have consistently served the party’s interests.

Republican candidates deserve leadership that works to help them win elections.

12. McDonald’s Credibility: Can Nevada Republicans Trust Their Chairman?

After examining McDonald’s history of ethics controversies, political disputes, and public investigations, I have serious concerns about his credibility.

I no longer trust Michael McDonald’s leadership or his representations about party affairs.

That is my personal assessment, based on his public record and my experiences within Republican politics.

Party members should be able to question their chairman without being subjected to insults, personal attacks, or political retaliation.

A chairman should answer difficult questions with documentation, not hostility.

Trust must be earned through accountability, transparency, and results.

13. The Republican Party’s Failure to Grow and Become More Diverse

I believe Nevada’s Republican Party has failed to reach its full potential under McDonald’s leadership.

The party should be actively recruiting veterans, young voters, women, minority communities, independent voters, and people who have become disillusioned with both major political parties.

Instead, I see an organization that has struggled with internal division, insufficient outreach, and leadership controversies.

I also have serious concerns about whether McDonald’s leadership has fostered an inclusive and respectful environment.

I believe his conduct warrants scrutiny for possible racial bias and discriminatory treatment.

That is a concern and opinion, not an established finding that McDonald has engaged in racial discrimination.

A political party that expects to govern a diverse state must demonstrate respect for every community.

14. The October 3, 2026, Execution-Themed Image: Political Satire or Something More Disturbing?

An image circulated depicting an Old West-style execution scene with the date October 3, 2026, displayed prominently above a gallows.

The image portrays a figure wearing a detective badge, another figure beneath a noose, and a third figure operating a lever while holding documents marked “EVIDENCE.”

The image is labeled “SATIRE.”

I identify the figures in this image as representing Nephi Olivia, also known as Khaliki; myself, Steve Sanson; and Michael McDonald.

In my interpretation, the image portrays me as the person facing execution while McDonald is depicted operating the lever.

I find that imagery deeply offensive and disturbing.

I have not seen McDonald publicly deny approving the image. However, the absence of a denial does not establish that he created, approved, authorized, or distributed it.

I believe McDonald should publicly clarify whether he had any involvement with this image.

Did he authorize it? Did he approve its circulation? Does he condemn imagery portraying political opponents being executed?

These are fair questions for a party chairman.

Political disagreements should be settled through debate, elections, and the party’s established procedures—not imagery that portrays political opponents being hanged.

15. Who Is the Real “Cancer” Within the Nevada Republican Party?

At the October 3, 2026, Nevada Republican Central Committee meeting, I contend that McDonald publicly referred to Stephanie Phillips and me as a “cancer” within the Republican Party.

I strongly object to that characterization.

My political philosophy has always been that candidates should be evaluated on their qualifications, character, integrity, and record—not simply their political party registration.

I believe the Republican Party should welcome independent thought rather than punish it.

If McDonald wants to describe political disagreement as a cancer, perhaps Republicans should examine whether his own leadership has become the problem.

After years of controversies, ethics findings, internal disputes, and election defeats, I believe McDonald has become a destructive force within the Nevada Republican Party.

In my opinion, Michael McDonald’s leadership is the true cancer undermining the party’s credibility, unity, and growth.

That is my political judgment, not a medical characterization or an allegation of criminal conduct.

16. Nevada Republicans Deserve Better Leadership

The Nevada Republican Party belongs to its members, volunteers, donors, candidates, and voters.

It does not belong to Michael McDonald.

Republicans deserve a chairman who welcomes scrutiny, discloses potential conflicts of interest, treats members respectfully, supports qualified candidates, and works to expand the party.

McDonald’s public record provides ample reasons to question whether he is the right person to continue leading the organization.

After more than a decade under his chairmanship, Nevada Republicans should ask whether loyalty to one individual has become more important than loyalty to the party’s principles.

The party needs transparency, accountability, diversity, ethical leadership, and measurable election results.

MICHAEL J. McDONALD: HE’S CAPABLE OF ANYTHING?

That is the question.

Nevada Republicans should examine the documented record, demand answers, and decide for themselves.
