Born for the Job Jason Gunnell will bring civility to the North Las Vegas Municipal Bench!

Las Vegas, Nevada

March 7, 2022

Veterans In Politics video internet talk show interviewed Jason Gunnell candidate for North Las Vegas Municipal Court Judge and Vem Miller special cohost.

Gunnell spent 8 years on active duty in the United States Air Force and is currently on his fifth year in the Air Force Reserves ranked at Lieutenant Colonel.

Gunnell is a Judge Advocate General (JAG) in the Air Force.

Can’t Recall Judges:

The host asked Gunnell; what is his opinion on the following; Nevada’s Supreme Court ruling that judges cannot be Recalled. Following up; the Judicial Branch of government in this state is the only elected branch that cant be Recalled.

Gunnell said the law must be followed that changing or adding to laws must come from the Legislative Branch of government.

The host asked Gunnell; after North Las Vegas reduced the municipal courts to one to unseat then Judge Catherine Ramsey.

What committee appointed Judge Lee to the Bench:

Now, years later the city of North Las Vegas arbitrarily appointed Judge Chris Lee to a recreated municipal court seat. Lee was unseated in his reelection bid from the North Las Vegas Justice of the Peace bench. Judge Belinda Harris now occupies that seat.

Lee was appointed without the Judicial Selection Committee taking applications and sending three names to the city council for appointment.  The city just gave Lee a job with the power of a sitting judge.

Moving forward the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed suit and the judge on the case agreed that this seat should be on the ballot.

Yes, the city of North Las Vegas attempted to take away your voting rights.

The media reports on their online media as if the City of North Las Vegas just created that department. That is so far from the truth the fact is that Judge Warren Van Landschoot left that department 2 in 2011 and Judge Ramsey filled the seat soon after.

The host asked Gunnell how do you feel about that. Gunnell responded; “sounds like he got a good deal”.  Placing jokes aside Gunnell said he doesn’t know all the facts, but it seems like steps were not being followed.

More about Gunnell:

Gunnell said North Las Vegas is his home and it would be an honor for him to serve North Las Vegas in this capacity.

Gunnell is currently a Senior Deputy Attorney General and a member of the JAG on Nellis Air Force Base.

Gunnell sounds like a person that truly believes in his community, he said that he would be a judge that would be in the communities and help to build a bridge between the community and the judicial system.

Now, this is the type of person we would love behind the bench. Gunnell speaks from the heart, he is humble, conscientious, a military veteran, knowledgeable about the law, and has judicial temperament.

Now judicial temperament is a priceless commodity in a judge. Nationwide, not many judges on the bench today have “judicial temperament”.

Judicial temperament describes a judge’s general attitude toward the law, litigants, and other judges. According to the American Bar Association, judicial temperament means that a judge exhibits “compassion, decisiveness, open-mindedness, sensitivity, courtesy, patience, freedom from bias and commitment to equal justice.

Remove or Retain Judges:

The host asked Gunnell his opinion on the bill Veterans In Politics introduced entitled “Remove or Retained” in an effort of getting rid of bad judges.

Gunnell said; that is not a bad process to go.

The host said that he is tired of seeing bad judges remain on the bench because they have no opposition from the many spineless and corrupt attorneys that reside in Clark County Nevada.

NRS § 294A.451 (PROPOSED) ASSEMBLY BILL

“Where incumbent judges run unopposed in general elections—whether by failure to draw challengers or by winning primary elections—the names of the unopposed incumbent judges shall appear on general election ballots—along with the option for voters to either ‘remove’ or ‘retain’ the unopposed incumbent judges.  Where unopposed incumbent judges win a simple majority to ‘retain,’ that candidate shall be declared the winner; but where unopposed incumbents fail to win a simple majority, the judicial seat shall become vacant; the judicial selection committee shall then receive applications for that seat.  Upon conclusion of the candidate selection process, three names shall be presented to the Governor, who shall select a candidate to fill the vacancy in a manner not inconsistent with Nevada law.”
