LEO BLUNDO UNDER THE MICROSCOPE: Nye County Chair

LEO BLUNDO UNDER THE MICROSCOPE: Nye County Chair

Federal Charges, Ethics Violations, Party Leadership, and New Questions for the Nevada GOP

Leo Blundo currently holds one of Nevada’s Republican Party leadership positions as chairman of the Nye County Republican Central Committee. The Nevada Republican Party’s own county-party directory identifies Blundo as chairman. Nevada Republican Party

That position makes his public record a legitimate matter of scrutiny.

And that record includes substantially more than ordinary intraparty disagreement.

Blundo has previously faced an official Nevada ethics proceeding, controversies during his tenure as a Nye County commissioner, a reported domestic-battery investigation that did not result in charges according to later reporting, and now a pending federal criminal prosecution involving allegations of wire fraud and money laundering.

Those facts raise a legitimate question for Nevada Republican Party leadership:

What standards should apply to someone entrusted with leadership inside the party?

THE FEDERAL INDICTMENT

The most serious issue is also the newest.

In March 2026, federal prosecutors indicted Blundo on wire fraud and money-laundering charges arising from COVID-19 relief programs.

According to reporting on the indictment, prosecutors allege that Blundo sought relief funds for his Pahrump restaurant, Carmelo’s Bistro, using false documentation and inflated figures concerning revenue, payroll, and employees. The indictment concerns more than $500,000 received through federal relief initiatives, including the Paycheck Protection Program and Restaurant Revitalization Fund. Review Journal

Those are allegations—not convictions.

Blundo pleaded not guilty and publicly characterized the prosecution as politically motivated, saying that he expected to be vindicated. Pahrump Valley Times

That distinction is essential.

Blundo is entitled to the presumption of innocence, and the federal government bears the burden of proving its allegations beyond a reasonable doubt.

But Republican Party members are equally entitled to ask whether a county chairman facing serious federal criminal charges should continue exercising party leadership while the case is pending.

THIS ISN’T BLUNDO’S FIRST ETHICS CONTROVERSY

Years before the federal indictment, Blundo faced scrutiny from the Nevada Commission on Ethics while serving as a Nye County commissioner.

In 2019, two ethics complaints alleged that Blundo improperly used his position in connection with his private business and his then-fiancée.

The Nevada Commission on Ethics ultimately approved a stipulated resolution finding one non-willful violation of Nevada ethics law involving Blundo’s use of his official position in a matter related to his private restaurant business.

Importantly, the commission dismissed allegations involving an appointment for his fiancée because insufficient evidence supported the alleged violation.

The commission’s resolution amounted to a public admonishment of Blundo’s conduct. The commission also noted mitigating factors, including that the conduct produced no financial benefit and that Blundo cooperated with the investigation. Ethics Commission of Nevada

This wasn’t merely somebody’s political accusation against him.

It went through Nevada’s official ethics process.

ADDITIONAL ETHICS COMPLAINTS

In 2022, KTNV reported that the Nevada Commission on Ethics confirmed Blundo was the subject of multiple additional ethics complaints.

According to the station, two resulted in letters of caution, while another matter was referred to the Nye County Commission for further proceedings. At the time of KTNV’s reporting, no final determination had been issued in that latter matter. Channel 13 Las Vegas News KTNV

Again, allegations and caution letters should not be confused with criminal convictions.

But taken together, the record provides legitimate grounds for examining Blundo’s conduct as a public official and political leader.

THE 2022 DOMESTIC INCIDENT

Blundo was also investigated following a March 28, 2022, domestic disturbance.

According to contemporaneous reporting, Blundo himself called authorities. A woman subsequently told responding deputies that Blundo had physically attacked her, and deputies prepared a domestic-battery report that was forwarded to the Nye County District Attorney. FOX5 Las Vegas

Later reporting concerning the incident states that no charges were filed. The Nevada Independent

That fact belongs in any accurate account.

The same incident also generated allegations involving missing money. The Nevada Independent reported that Blundo complained that someone had stolen a substantial amount of money; the sheriff’s report referenced allegations involving approximately $77,000 in cash and a Glock pistol. The publication reported at the time that the incident had resulted in no charges. The Nevada Independent

MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE

Public reporting confirms that Leo and Melissa Blundo subsequently divorced.

A recent Las Vegas Review-Journal report quotes Melissa Blundo in connection with court filings and states that the couple is now divorced. Review Journal

Divorce itself is not evidence of wrongdoing and should not be treated as such.

Unless additional court records establish facts materially connected to Blundo’s public conduct or political leadership, his private marital history should remain separate from legitimate examination of his fitness to exercise party authority.

FOLLOW THE MONEY—BUT USE THE RIGHT MONEY

There is also a financial record that can be examined.

When Blundo ran for Nevada’s Fourth Congressional District in 2020, his federal campaign reported $59,244.07 in total receipts, including more than $58,000 in individual contributions, according to the Federal Election Commission. FEC.gov

Examine Leo Blundo’s official FEC record

That, however, is Blundo’s congressional campaign money—not money raised by the Nye County Republican Central Committee during his chairmanship.

I have not located reliable records establishing exactly how much the Nye County Republican Central Committee raised before and during Blundo’s chairmanship. Likewise, I have not found reliable membership records establishing the claimed membership reduction.

Those figures should therefore not be invented.

If the Nye County GOP possesses treasurer reports, membership rosters, meeting minutes, or state campaign-finance reports documenting those changes, those records would allow a meaningful before-and-after analysis:

How much money was in the organization when Blundo became chairman?

How much has been raised during his chairmanship?

How much has been spent?

What were the major expenditures?

How many voting members existed when he took office?

How many remain today?

How many members resigned, were removed, or stopped participating?

Those are measurable leadership questions.

WHAT HAPPENED OCTOBER 3, 2026?

Another dispute now requires investigation.

According to information provided by Veterans In Politics International, Inc. and Steve Sanson, during the October 3, 2026, Nevada Republican Party State Central Committee gathering, Blundo allegedly made statements about Stephanie Phillips, whom Sanson described as a Republican Party member in good standing.

Sanson alleges that Blundo falsely accused Phillips of making telephone calls intended to encourage Democrats to disrupt or “storm” a Republican reception the preceding evening.

I have not independently verified that allegation or found reliable public evidence establishing that Phillips made such calls.

Sanson disputes Blundo’s accusation and states that he believes Blundo participated in or helped orchestrate events designed to create grounds for removing Phillips from the Nevada Republican Party.

That is Sanson’s allegation and interpretation—not an independently established fact.

But because the allegation concerns conduct at an official Republican Party gathering and the potential discipline or removal of a party member, it can be investigated.

There should be evidence.

Who first accused Phillips?

What telephone records support the accusation?

Who supposedly received the calls?

Who actually contacted Democrats?

Were texts, emails, or social-media messages exchanged?

Who discussed Phillips before the reception?

Did anyone discuss a plan to discipline or remove her beforehand?

Did anyone interview witnesses before allegations were repeated publicly?

Records and testimony can answer those questions.

A REQUEST FOR A FORMAL NVGOP INVESTIGATION

Veterans In Politics International, Inc. and Steve Sanson call on the Nevada Republican Party Executive Committee to conduct a complete, impartial investigation into Blundo’s conduct.

That request should include examination of:

  1. The circumstances and evidence surrounding statements allegedly made about Stephanie Phillips on October 3, 2026.

  2. Whether Blundo knowingly communicated materially false information about another Republican Party member.

  3. Whether anyone coordinated an effort to manufacture grounds for disciplinary action against Phillips.

  4. Blundo’s conduct and performance as Nye County Republican chairman, including party finances and membership.

  5. The final dispositions of previous ethics matters involving Blundo.

  6. The pending federal indictment, while recognizing that Blundo has pleaded not guilty and is presumed innocent.

  7. Whether the totality of any substantiated conduct constitutes “cause” under the applicable Nevada Republican Party bylaws.

The Executive Committee should obtain evidence before reaching conclusions.

If an investigation substantiates conduct that qualifies as “cause” under the governing bylaws, Sanson and Veterans In Politics are asking the appropriate Nevada Republican Party body to consider removal proceedings and conduct whatever vote the bylaws require.

That is different from declaring in advance that Blundo is guilty or that removal is mandatory.

Investigate first. Establish the facts. Apply the bylaws. Then vote according to those findings.

THE QUESTIONS ARE NOW BIGGER THAN ONE MAN

Leo Blundo’s record contains matters that are already documented without embellishment:

A Nevada ethics violation and public admonishment.

Additional ethics complaints and caution letters reported in 2022.

A domestic-battery investigation that later reporting says produced no charges.

A federal indictment alleging wire fraud and money laundering involving COVID-relief funds.

A not-guilty plea and Blundo’s insistence that the prosecution is politically motivated.

And now disputed allegations concerning another Nevada Republican Party member that Veterans In Politics is asking party leadership to investigate.

Political organizations have every right to establish their own standards for leadership.

But those standards should be applied through evidence rather than rumor.

If Blundo’s accusations concerning Stephanie Phillips are true, evidence should establish them.

If they are false, the Nevada Republican Party should determine how and why they were circulated.

If allegations about Blundo himself are unsubstantiated, the party should reject them.

If they are substantiated, the party should determine what its bylaws require.

THE QUESTION FOR THE NEVADA GOP IS SIMPLE:

WHAT DOES “CAUSE” MEAN—AND WILL THE PARTY APPLY THAT STANDARD TO ITS OWN LEADERS?

The answer should come from evidence, due process, and the Nevada Republican Party’s actual bylaws—not personal alliances, rumors, or factional politics.
